Welcome to Maplewood Family Dental
Not every dentist in Knightdale NC takes the time to explain what’s happening in your mouth in plain, everyday language, but that’s exactly the standard Dr. Kevin Chidester, DMD holds himself to at Maplewood Family Dental. He leads this practice with a straightforward commitment to honest, relationship-based dental care that puts your comfort and confidence first. This isn’t a revolving-door dental office where you’re rushed in and out.
Every appointment is an opportunity to check in on your oral health, answer your questions, and make sure your treatment plans are working for your life. Patients consistently describe Dr. Chidester as thorough, knowledgeable, and genuinely easy to talk to, which makes a real difference when it comes to staying on top of your dental health care year after year.

Our Mission
Good dental care goes beyond clean teeth and a bright smile. It’s about building a foundation of trust so you actually look forward to coming in. Dr. Kevin Chidester, DMD designed Maplewood Family Dental around a simple idea: patients who feel respected and well-informed make better decisions about their oral health. That means no rushed explanations, no confusing jargon, and no treatment plans that don’t make sense to you.
The team takes time with every patient, new patient visits included, to review findings, discuss options, and tailor personalized care solutions that fit your needs and comfort level. Healthy smiles are the goal, and the path to get there should feel clear, supportive, and completely centered on you.
Our Services
Clear Aligners for People Who Are Done Hiding Their Smile
Crooked teeth have a way of making people pull back: covering their mouth when they laugh, avoiding photos, or just feeling less confident in everyday conversations. You deserve better than that. Clear aligners are a practical, low-profile way to straighten your teeth without announcing it to everyone around you.
We offer ClearCorrect and Simply Clear, two trusted aligner systems that we fit, monitor, and adjust right here in our office. Patients of all ages go through the same process: custom trays, a planned sequence of movement, and a dentist who actually knows your history.
Why Crooked Teeth Affect More Than Just Looks
Misaligned teeth aren’t just a cosmetic issue. They can make cleaning harder, cause uneven wear, and sometimes lead to jaw discomfort over time. Addressing the alignment now means fewer problems down the road, not just a better-looking smile.
- Crowded teeth trap more plaque and are harder to floss properly
- Gaps and overlaps can create pressure on specific teeth
- An uneven bite puts extra stress on your jaw joints
- Small shifts caught early are easier to correct than major ones
- Straighter teeth are genuinely easier to keep clean long-term
What ClearCorrect and Simply Clear Actually Do
These aren’t one-size-fits-all trays ordered from a website. ClearCorrect and Simply Clear are professionally designed systems that require a trained dentist to plan and oversee. We take precise records of your teeth, map out the full movement sequence, and create trays specific to your mouth and nobody else’s.
- Each tray set is custom-made from your impressions
- Trays are replaced on a schedule your dentist sets
- Progress is checked at regular in-office visits
- Trays are removable for eating, brushing, and flossing
- Treatment length varies based on your actual case, not a generic estimate
Feeling embarrassed about your smile is common, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. Talk to us about clear aligners and find out what’s possible for your teeth!
Dental Cleanings That Keep Your Mouth Healthy Between the Big Stuff
Most people only think about the dentist when something hurts. By that point, a problem that could have been caught and handled simply has usually grown into something that requires more time, more treatment, and more expense. Regular cleanings flip that pattern entirely. Coming in twice a year means we’re watching your mouth closely enough to catch small changes before they turn into real problems.
Our hygiene team builds a genuine relationship with patients who come back consistently. We know your history, we notice what’s shifted since your last visit, and we flag concerns early. That continuity is one of the most underrated parts of routine dental care.
What a Professional Cleaning Does That Brushing at Home Cannot
No matter how disciplined your home routine is, there are places in your mouth that a toothbrush and floss simply can’t reach effectively. Tartar, which is hardened plaque, bonds to tooth surfaces and can only be removed with professional instruments. Left in place, it irritates the gumline and creates the conditions for gum disease to develop quietly over time.
A cleaning at Maplewood Family Dental goes beyond surface polishing. Our hygienists work through every tooth systematically, clearing buildup from areas most patients don’t realize are accumulating it.
- Tartar cannot be removed by brushing and requires professional scaling
- Buildup along the gumline is a primary driver of early gum disease
- Interdental spaces and back molars collect the most overlooked debris
- Polishing after scaling removes surface staining and smooths enamel
- A clean tooth surface is harder for new plaque to adhere to quickly
Why Consistent Patients End Up With Healthier Mouths Over Time
There’s a meaningful difference between the mouth of someone who has seen a dentist regularly for ten years and someone who comes in only when something goes wrong. Consistent cleanings reduce the total amount of bacterial load in the mouth over time, which has a direct effect on gum health, tooth integrity, and even systemic health. Research continues to find connections between chronic oral inflammation and conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
The patients who benefit most are the ones who treat their six-month cleaning as a standing appointment rather than something to reschedule indefinitely. Our hygiene team makes that easy by keeping appointments efficient, comfortable, and worth showing up for.
- Patients with consistent cleaning schedules experience less bone loss over time
- Chronic gum inflammation has been linked to increased cardiovascular risk
- Regular visits allow for early intervention that preserves more natural tooth structure
- Familiarity with your hygienist makes appointments faster and more comfortable
- Keeping the same recall schedule builds a complete, accurate record of your oral health
Your mouth is easier to maintain than it is to repair. Two visits a year is a small commitment for what it protects over the long run.
Implants That Fill the Gap and Hold Their Ground
Missing teeth do more than change the way your smile looks. Over time, the bone underneath an empty socket begins to shrink because there’s no tooth root stimulating it. That loss of volume can shift neighboring teeth, alter your bite, and even change the shape of your face. Dental implants address the problem at its source by replacing the root itself, not just the visible tooth.
Each implant is a small titanium post placed directly into the jawbone. Once it bonds with the bone, a custom crown is attached on top. The result is a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions like the real thing and our Knightdale dentist oversees the entire process from placement through final restoration.
The Real Cost of Leaving a Gap Untreated
A missing tooth can feel like a minor inconvenience at first. The surrounding teeth don’t see it that way. They gradually drift toward the open space, which throws off alignment and creates new problems for your bite. The bone in that area also shrinks faster than most people expect.
- Neighboring teeth shift and tip into the gap over time
- Bone loss at the empty site can affect nearby tooth roots
- A compromised bite puts uneven pressure across your jaw
- Gaps make cleaning harder, raising cavity and gum disease risk
- Facial structure around the cheeks and chin can change as bone recedes
Clearing Up What Most People Get Wrong About Implants
A lot of patients assume implants are only for older adults, or that the process is too involved to be worth it. Neither holds up. Implants are appropriate for most healthy adults who have finished growing, and the placement procedure is more straightforward than many expect. Our dentist will review your bone density and overall health to confirm you’re a good candidate before anything else happens.
- Implants are not reserved for seniors or full-mouth cases
- Most patients need a single implant per missing tooth, not a complex surgery
- The titanium post is biocompatible and rarely rejected by the body
- Discomfort after placement is typically manageable with over-the-counter relief
- Many patients return to normal activity within a day or two
A single missing tooth sets off a chain reaction that gets harder to reverse the longer it goes unaddressed. Implants stop that process and restore what was lost in a way that no bridge or denture can fully replicate. If you’ve been putting off the conversation, now is a reasonable time to have it.
Crowns That Give a Struggling Tooth a Real Second Chance
Most people assume that a tooth that’s cracked, heavily decayed, or broken off at the gumline is already lost. That’s rarely true. A crown can save a tooth that looks beyond help, as long as the root underneath is still sound. Our dentist will tell you honestly what’s salvageable and what isn’t. No pressure, no upselling, just a straight answer about what your tooth actually needs.
The process is more approachable than most patients expect. We walk you through every step before we start, so nothing catches you off guard. A custom-fitted crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth, sealing it from further damage and restoring the strength needed for normal chewing.
What Actually Qualifies a Tooth for a Crown
Patients are often surprised by how much can still be saved. A tooth that’s been cracked for months, one that’s lost most of its outer wall to decay, or one that’s been weakened by repeated large fillings — these are exactly the situations where a crown does its best work. The visible damage doesn’t always reflect what’s happening below the gumline, and that root is what matters most.
At Maplewood Family Dental, our dentist in Knightdale takes time to look at the full picture before recommending anything. If a crown is the right call, we explain exactly why before moving forward.
- A crack confined to the crown of the tooth is often very treatable
- Teeth with large fillings losing their remaining walls are strong candidates
- Significant decay that hasn’t reached the root can still be restored
- Broken cusps that leave the root intact are routinely saved with crowns
- Teeth that have had a root canal almost always need a crown to function properly
Setting the Record Straight on What the Procedure Feels Like
Crown appointments have a reputation for being long, uncomfortable, and confusing. The reality is much more manageable. We numb the area thoroughly before any prep work begins, and we don’t move forward until you’re comfortable. Our dentist narrates what’s happening as we go, so you’re never left guessing about a sound or sensation.
Digital scanning replaces the old putty impression trays, which means no gagging, no waiting for material to set, and a more precise fit for your crown.
- Local anesthetic is applied before any preparation begins
- Digital scans are quick, comfortable, and more accurate than traditional impressions
- You’ll know what each step involves before it happens
- Most patients are surprised by how routine the experience feels
- Sensitivity after the appointment is normal and typically fades within a few days
If you’ve been avoiding the dentist because you’re convinced your tooth can’t be saved, it’s worth finding out for certain. You may have more options than you think.
Same Day Fillings That Look Like They Were Never There
For a long time, getting a cavity filled meant walking out with a silver spot on your tooth that announced itself every time you opened your mouth. That’s not how we do things. Our same day fillings use tooth-colored composite resin matched to the shade of your natural enamel, so the finished result disappears into your smile rather than standing out from it.
The procedure moves quickly and comfortably. Our dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth, applies the composite resin in layers, shapes it to fit your bite, and hardens it with a curing light — all in a single visit. You leave with a fully restored tooth the same day, no temporary filling, no return appointment.
Why the Material Your Filling Is Made From Actually Matters
Composite resin does more than look better than older amalgam fillings. It bonds directly to the tooth structure, which means our dentist removes only the decayed portion rather than shaving down surrounding healthy enamel to anchor the filling in place. That preserves more of your natural tooth long-term.
Amalgam fillings expand and contract slightly with temperature changes over years of use, which can eventually cause small cracks in the surrounding tooth wall. Composite resin doesn’t behave the same way, making it a more stable choice for the tooth underneath.
- Composite resin bonds to the tooth rather than relying on mechanical retention
- Less healthy enamel is removed compared to traditional amalgam placement
- Tooth-colored material reflects light similarly to natural enamel
- No metallic taste or sensitivity to temperature changes associated with metal fillings
- The shade is selected to blend with your surrounding teeth before placement begins
How Same Day Fillings Fit Into a Healthier Dental Future
Leaving a cavity untreated doesn’t pause the problem. Decay spreads inward toward the nerve, and what starts as a straightforward filling can become a root canal if ignored long enough. Getting a same day filling handled quickly at Maplewood Family Dental cuts that progression off before it reaches the point of no return.
Composite fillings also make future monitoring easier. Our dentist can visually inspect a tooth-colored filling at routine checkups without the distortion that metal restorations sometimes create on X-rays. That means any changes around the restoration get noticed sooner.
- Early treatment keeps the procedure simple and the cost lower
- Decay caught at the filling stage rarely requires more complex intervention
- Composite fillings don’t interfere with X-ray imaging the way metal can
- A well-placed filling extends the functional life of the tooth significantly
- Addressing one cavity promptly protects neighboring teeth from bacterial spread
A cavity that gets filled today is a problem that stops growing. If you’ve noticed sensitivity to sweets or cold, or your last checkup flagged a spot worth watching, it’s worth getting it looked at before the decision gets made for you.
Same Day Extractions That Resolve the Problem Before You Leave
Most people dread the idea of coming in for an exam, being told a tooth needs to come out, and then having to schedule yet another appointment to actually deal with it. That back-and-forth drags out discomfort and keeps the problem sitting in your mouth longer than it needs to. Our dentist assesses the tooth and performs the extraction the same day whenever clinically appropriate, so you walk out with the issue resolved rather than a follow-up card in your hand.
Same day extractions work for a range of situations — a tooth too damaged to restore, one causing crowding, or an infection that needs to be cleared quickly. We evaluate what’s happening first, explain your options clearly, and if extraction is the right call, we move forward that day.
When Waiting Around Makes a Tooth Problem Worse
A tooth that needs to come out doesn’t stay in a holding pattern. Infection spreads. Pressure from a failing tooth affects the ones next to it. Patients who delay because they don’t want to deal with multiple appointments often find that the situation has worsened by the time they come back. Getting it handled in one visit eliminates that risk entirely.
At Maplewood Family Dental, our dentist doesn’t separate the diagnosis from the solution when same day treatment is possible. That means less time in discomfort and fewer disruptions to your week.
- An abscessed tooth can spread infection to surrounding bone and tissue if left
- A cracked or failing tooth puts neighboring teeth under uneven pressure
- Decay from an unsalvageable tooth can transfer to adjacent healthy teeth
- Delaying an extraction sometimes turns a simple procedure into a more complex one
- Resolving the problem the same day prevents unnecessary follow-up visits
What Losing One Tooth Sets in Motion
An extracted tooth that isn’t eventually replaced can quietly create new problems over the months that follow. The surrounding teeth begin shifting toward the gap. The jawbone underneath the empty socket starts to shrink without a root to stimulate it. Neither process happens overnight, but both are worth understanding before you leave the appointment.
Our dentist talks through what comes next during the same visit, so you have a clear picture of your options for replacing the tooth when the time is right. Same day extraction is the start of solving the problem, not the end of the conversation.
- Neighboring teeth drift gradually into an unfilled gap
- Bone loss at the extraction site begins within months of removal
- Shifting teeth can alter your bite and create new pressure points
- Replacement options like implants or bridges are worth discussing early
- Planning ahead keeps future treatment simpler and less involved
Some dental decisions feel bigger than they are. An extraction sounds daunting until it’s done, and most patients are surprised by how quickly they feel relief once the source of the problem is gone. If a tooth has been bothering you, one appointment is all it takes to find out where you actually stand.

FAQs
How often should I visit the dentist?
Most patients benefit from a checkup and cleaning every six months. Some patients may need more frequent visits depending on their oral health, gum condition, or medical history. We’ll always recommend what’s best for you — not a one-size-fits-all schedule.
How often should I brush and floss?
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day. Brushing cleans tooth surfaces, but flossing removes plaque between teeth where cavities and gum disease often start.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes. We use modern digital X-rays, which expose patients to very low levels of radiation. X-rays allow us to catch issues early and often before you feel pain.
Why do I still get cavities even though I brush?
Cavities aren’t just about brushing. Diet, saliva, tooth anatomy, genetics, and brushing technique all play a role. Our goal is prevention and education, not blame.
Do you offer same-day or emergency appointments?
Yes. We prioritize seeing emergency patients the same day whenever possible. If you’re experiencing pain, swelling, or a dental emergency, call our office right away and we’ll guide you on next steps.
How often should I schedule a dental visit?
Most patients benefit from visiting their dentist twice a year for routine cleanings and examinations. These visits are one of the most effective ways to catch small issues before they develop into larger, more complex problems. For patients managing specific oral health conditions, Dr. Chidester may recommend a different frequency as part of a personalized care plan. Staying consistent with your schedule is one of the simplest things you can do for your long-term dental health.
What should I do if I have a dental emergency?
A dental emergency can happen at any time, and knowing where to turn makes a significant difference in the outcome. The practice prioritizes same-day emergency dental appointments whenever possible, so you’re not left waiting in pain. Dial 919.438.3933 as soon as an issue arises so the team can assess your situation and get you in quickly. Prompt attention to an emergency dental situation often means less invasive treatment and a faster recovery.
Is this practice suitable for patients with dental anxiety?
Dental anxiety is more common than most people realize, and this office is set up to make even the most nervous patients feel at ease. Sedation options are available for both children and adults, and the team takes a patient, judgment-free approach with every appointment. Treatment rooms are equipped with TVs and headphones so you can stay distracted and relaxed during your visit. Dr. Chidester takes the time to explain each step before proceeding, so nothing ever catches you off guard.
How do I know which dental services are right for me?
The best starting point is a comprehensive exam, which gives Dr. Chidester a clear picture of your current oral health and what areas need attention. From there, he’ll walk you through your options and build treatment plans that are tailored specifically to your needs, your timeline, and your comfort level. There’s never any pressure to commit to everything at once, as the goal is to help you make informed decisions at your own pace. Every recommendation is grounded in what’s genuinely best for your smile goals and overall wellness.
Can adults and children both be seen at this practice?
Yes, this is a true family dental practice, meaning patients of all ages are welcome under one roof. Children benefit from pediatric dental services designed to build healthy dental hygiene habits early, while adults have access to a full range of general, cosmetic, and restorative dental services. Having one trusted dentist in Knightdale for your entire family simplifies scheduling and ensures continuity of care across every stage of life. It also means Dr. Chidester gets to know your family’s full dental health history over time.
